Cava de' Tirreni

foto cava piazza duomoCava de ' Tirreni is an ancient and historical city, now home to more than 50,000 inhabitants distributed in the village and in more than twenty villages , giving in Cava de ' Tyrrhenians the characteristic of " star city " .

Its first inhabitants , the "terre de la Cava ," were the Tyrrhenians , Etruscan nomadic tribes , whose presence is documented by artifacts in the Museum of Archaeology of the Benedictine Abbey and in ' civic Antiquarium .

In Roman times it was a place renowned resort chosen by the nobility of Rome. 

Remains of temples and villas of Roman times, probably belonging to the Gens Mitilia were found in the ancient villages of Vetranto and S. Cesareo . Other Roman remains were found in different parts of the territory, especially in the north , on the border of the ' Roman settlement of Nuceria Alfaterna .
It was inhabited by the Lombards , whose civilization is still witnessed by a number of ancient towers built for the Game of the Doves and many place names, dating from three centuries of Lombard domination (IX - XI).

Amalfi

Ravello

ravello ingresso villa rufoloRavello was founded in the fifth century as a place of refuge from the incursions of the barbarians that marked the fall of the Western Roman Empire , but there immigrated to the legend of the patricians Amalfi after a clash between factions of the more high- class Coast, which resulted almost in a civil war.

The town grew in population , thriving with art and with the wool trade to the Mediterranean and Byzantium and reached its heyday in the ninth century , under the Maritime Republic of Amalfi and the Principality of Salerno.
At the behest of the Norman Roger , son of Robert Guiscard , Ravello became a bishopric in 1086 placing it in contrast to the Amalfi too powerful .
At the turn of the twelfth century, the city came to have a population of over 25,000 inhabitants.
In 1135 he managed to withstand the attacks made by the Pisans to the Duchy of Amalfi, but two years later, in 1137, succumbed , was plundered and destroyed .

Placed in the heart of the homounymous gulf, portrayed by the famous salernitan poet Alfonso Gatto as the "lunato" (lunar),Salerno represents the combination between a fascinating history and a huge sphere af artistic, urbanistic and architectural beauties. Its provenances are very old and, above all, extremely high-toned. The first statements of the town are about 194 a.C. when, at the feet of the Castrum Salerni (now the hill of the Arechi castle) borned a roman settlement.

Under the empire of Costantin, Salerno becomes the main seat of the province of Lucania et Brutium. But by the time the city subjected several Barbarian invasions, and while in this period of time the clergy was becoming always more preminent especially on the political and social point of view.

Among the VII and the VIII century Salerno, full of wealthy traders, was conquerred twice by the Longobards: in 646 and in 759. Thanks to the historical chagement there is the birth of the Principality of Salerno, governed by the Duke Arechi II, who will have his residence in the magnificent and majestic castle the now has its name and that stands above the hill where the Castrum Salerni was located.
