Cava de' Tirreni

foto cava piazza duomoCava de ' Tirreni is an ancient and historical city, now home to more than 50,000 inhabitants distributed in the village and in more than twenty villages , giving in Cava de ' Tyrrhenians the characteristic of " star city " .

Its first inhabitants , the "terre de la Cava ," were the Tyrrhenians , Etruscan nomadic tribes , whose presence is documented by artifacts in the Museum of Archaeology of the Benedictine Abbey and in ' civic Antiquarium .

In Roman times it was a place renowned resort chosen by the nobility of Rome. 

Remains of temples and villas of Roman times, probably belonging to the Gens Mitilia were found in the ancient villages of Vetranto and S. Cesareo . Other Roman remains were found in different parts of the territory, especially in the north , on the border of the ' Roman settlement of Nuceria Alfaterna .
It was inhabited by the Lombards , whose civilization is still witnessed by a number of ancient towers built for the Game of the Doves and many place names, dating from three centuries of Lombard domination (IX - XI).

In 1011 was founded the Benedictine Abbey of SS. Trinity.
The Abbot St. Peter I (1079-1123) founded and built in ' XI century Benedictine in the monastery near the village of Corpo di Cava , protected by high walls and bastions , in practice, the first modern settlement in the city of Cava .
